If you need a stylish, durable pair of boxing shoes that improves on the Hayabusa Pro outsole, the Hayabusa Talon Boxing Shoes are for you.
We’re still big fans of the Hayabusa Pro Boxing Shoes, which we still use often even after months of use with no issues.
In our review, one way we tested these shoes was wearing the Talon on one foot and wearing the Pro on the other during a workout, and then comparing.
Other times we tested the Talons with one size up and one size down.
Our first impression was how sharp its design is (especially in all black), even though its body has many layers.
We loved how these shoes were plug and play; no straps or extra long laces to deal with, and comfortable from the first (once we got the fit right).
What stuck out the most for us with these shoes were their outsoles. They have a unique tread that reminds us of basketball sneakers.
On foot, they gave us the right amount of grip in the ring, making us feel light and anchored at the same time.
After jump roping and warming up for half an hour, we noticed how well these shoes absorbed shock.
When we did a foot-by-foot comparison, the Talons improve on the outsole compared to the Pros.
If you’re a boxer who likes to stay on his toes instead of staying flat-footed, you’ll appreciate these shoes.
Despite the Talons’ layered body, their simple construction made them both lightweight and breathable.
We found that these shoes will protect your ankles well, but only if you get the fit right.
If you choose a size up, wear thicker socks so that the shoes will mold to your feet.
The flexible, yet sturdy mid-top design combined with the laces were enough to keep our feet locked in throughout our workouts.
Since you’re getting the right balance between quality, weight, and ankle support, you’ll pay a premium compared to other mid-top shoes on the market.
Knowing the care and attention Hayabusa gives its other flagship products, we assume it will last a long time.
On the other hand, we have the same criticisms that we had about the Hayabusa Pros:
- Expensive for beginners
- No half sizes
One thing to keep in mind is that these run large. We tested it twice each workout, once for size up and another time for size down. For best performance, we recommend getting a size down.
You may be wondering if you should get the Pros or Talons. We think that if you’re looking for an improved outsole and design, you should definitely get the Talons.
In all, we think Hayabusa has created a new classic. We can see ourselves wearing these for a long time.
Pros and Cons
PROS | CONS |
---|---|
✅Simple, stylish design ✅Improved bespoke outsole ✅Durable, multi-layered body | ❌Expensive for beginners ❌No half sizes |
Material Quality
The Hayabusa Talon shoes offer premium and reliable quality, especially in their outsoles and body design.
At first look, we appreciated their streamlined design and attention to detail. They reminded us of basketball shoes, instead of boxing shoes.
We appreciated that there was no break-in period with these shoes; they were comfortable from the very first workout.
We also noted that these shoes offer consistent shock absorption, no matter the surface and no matter how long your workout is.
Compared to the Pros, we noted that the Talons have an improved grip. Their unique tread kept our pivots always sharp with the right amount of grip.
We felt like we were able to change angles in a split-second and stay anchored to the ground at the same time.
Even though there’s a number of layers on the shoes’ body, we always felt cool and comfortable with them thanks to the breathable mesh outlay.
When we tested size up, we didn’t get maximum performance, noticing that the shoe’s body bends when laced tight.
However, when we tested size down, the Talons hug our feet in all the right places and form themselves to shape.
So far, there are no cosmetic issues or glaring quality issues.
We’ve only had these shoes for a couple of months, so we’ll check in again and give an update on how these shoes held up after a few more.
Weight
For a mid-top shoe, the Hayabusa Talon offers the right amount of weight to boxers who want to stay light in the ring.
Their simple design and execution makes them lightweight, even though there are many elements on the shoes’ body.
We tested each workout out while wearing the Talon on one foot and wearing a Pro on the other, and then comparing.
Compared to the Hayabusa Pros, we didn’t notice any significant difference in weight.
The Talons’ weight in combination with their sharp grip gives the right balance between staying light and anchored in the ring at the same time.
Ankle Support and Stability
The Hayabusa Talons offer reliable ankle support and stability, even though they only rely on laces and the shoes’ bodies.
In our review, we tested each workout while wearing the Talon on one foot and wearing our Pro on the other foot, and then comparing.
Compared with the Hayabusa Pros, we didn’t notice any significant difference in ankle support and stability.
For maximum support, we tied our Talons’ laces up to the top and finished with a knot around our ankles.
This was enough to keep our ankles locked through all of our workouts.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you don’t get the fit right, you won’t have good ankle security.
When we tested size up, we noticed that they felt loose. It helped when we wore athletic socks, but we could still feel the shoes’ shape bend.
However, we felt that we could get our shoes to hug our ankles when we tested size down.
We’ve only had these shoes for a couple of months, so we’ll check in again and give an update how the ankle support holds up after a few more.
Price
Since you’re getting the right balance between quality, weight, and ankle support, you’ll pay a premium for the Hayabusa Talons.
These can make great beginner shoes, but they will also be appreciated by a more experienced boxer.
Compared to the Hayabusa Pros, these cost a bit more. Here you’re paying for the improved design and outsole performance.
Because of this, we recommend these shoes to anyone who’s looking to upgrade from the Hayabusa Pros.
So far, these have been great for daily wear-and-tear, with no drop in performance or quality as we keep using them.
For its price point, the Hayabusa Talons offer the optimal balance between material quality, ankle support, and weight.

Can I Wear Boxing Shoes Outside?
We don’t recommend wearing your boxing shoes outside of the gym.
The tread of the soles are designed specifically for the ring, and not for rough surfaces like pavement. Using your shoes on outside surfaces will make your soles wear down faster than usual.
Do I Need Boxing Shoes?
If you want to improve and dial in your footwork in the ring, boxing shoes make a big difference. They allow you to stay light on your feet and rooted to the canvas at the same time.
Are High-Top or Low-Top Boxing Shoes Better?
While this is a question of personal preference, keep in mind that you’re making a trade-off between ankle protection and weight.
High-top shoes will provide more ankle protection with more weight, while low-top shoes will offer less ankle protection with less weight.
